Faith and Medicine Were Never Meant to Compete

Women are living longer than ever, yet far too many are living depleted.

Despite every modern advance, women today carry higher rates of chronic fatigue, autoimmune disease, hormone dysfunction, and metabolic and mood disorders than ever before. Nearly 80% of autoimmune diseases affect women. One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. Chronic fatigue affects women at almost twice the rate of men. Those are not fringe numbers anymore. They are becoming the norm.

After nearly two decades in healthcare and more than ten years in functional medicine, I have watched women quietly normalize symptoms that were never meant to be normal. Exhaustion. Weight gain. Brain fog. Anxiety. Hormone chaos. Pain. Burnout. Most assume it is simply the cost of aging, motherhood, leadership, or stress. It is not.

The three places women get stuck

Over the years I have seen the same few patterns repeat.

Some women avoid medicine altogether. They fear it, distrust it, or quietly believe that seeking care reflects a lack of faith. They pray and they hope, but they never investigate what is actually happening in their bodies.

Others seek care, receive a diagnosis, and then simply live with it. They are told they have type 2 diabetes or an autoimmune condition, handed a prescription, and sent on their way. The diagnosis becomes a label instead of a turning point.

And others take every pill offered without ever pausing to ask whether there is a root cause that could be addressed. Symptoms get managed, but the underlying terrain never changes.

None of these paths reflects the fullness of wisdom available to us. Avoiding medicine is not faith. Blindly accepting decline is not surrender. Medicating every symptom without seeking root restoration is not stewardship. There is a better way.

A third way

Faith and medicine were never meant to compete. They were meant to work together. Prayer and obedience. Investigation and discernment. Treatment and transformation.

From the very beginning of Scripture, God established rhythms: rest, sleep, work, Sabbath, fasting, stewardship, and order. These were never suggestions. They were design principles. When we honor them, health tends to flourish. When we ignore them, breakdown tends to follow.

Functional medicine has only deepened my faith. The more I study hormones, metabolism, cellular biology, and stress physiology, the more convinced I become that God is an extraordinary Creator. My job as a practitioner is not to override your biology. It is to help you realign with it.

Faith is not denial. Faith is alignment.

Faith does not ignore symptoms. Faith asks better questions.

God can heal instantly, and I have witnessed things that defy natural explanation. But He also heals progressively, and progressive healing requires participation. In Mark 8, Jesus heals a blind man in stages. After the first touch the man sees, but not clearly. Jesus touches him again, and his sight is fully restored. Healing did not fail. It unfolded. Many women pray for healing and then abandon the process when clarity does not come overnight.

A diagnosis is not a final verdict. It is information. Once we name what is happening in the body, we can pray over it and then align our habits with the healing we are asking for. Romans 12:1 calls us to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, which Paul describes as our reasonable act of service. Reasonable. Not radical. And 1 Corinthians 6:19 to 20 reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, that we were bought at a price, so we glorify God not only with our prayers but with how we eat, move, rest, forgive, and care for ourselves.

Seven pillars we will keep coming back to

Throughout the book we return to seven foundational pillars. They are not separate silos. They are deeply connected, and when one is neglected, the others eventually suffer.

  1. Faith and Mindset

  2. Nutrition: Food is Fuel

  3. Movement and Strength

  4. The 3 R's: Rest, Recovery, and Rhythm

  5. Detoxification and Cellular Health

  6. Hormone and Metabolic Balance

  7. Connection and Community

Everything builds on the first pillar. This is not about balancing the way the world defines it. It is about alignment.

If you recognize yourself anywhere in these words, hear this clearly. Your symptoms are not random. Your body is not broken beyond repair. And your story is not over. My goal is not to overload you, but to simplify what matters and hand you practical tools you can actually use, so you can live a long, vibrant life and fulfill every purpose you were made for.

Will you muster up an ounce of hope? Let the journey begin.

This post is drawn from the introduction of my new book, Where Faith Meets Medicine. It walks through all seven pillars, with a Selah reflection at the end of every chapter so you can pause, take it in, and bring it honestly before God.
