I was recently a guest on the You Are Worthy Network with host Steve Wormer. He titled our episode "Healing the Whole Person: Where Faith, Science and Purpose Meet," which pretty much sums up my whole career.
We started with my story. I knew I wanted to be a nurse practitioner in eighth grade, and I stuck with it. Years later, I walked away from insurance-based medicine after getting letters warning me I was ordering too many lab tests. I've been cash pay for over 13 years now. That freedom lets me dig for the root cause instead of rushing someone through a 10-minute visit.
Steve asked what I'm seeing in my practice right now. Autoimmune disease is rising, and about 80% of it happens in women. I'm also catching three to four times more tickborne illness than I was a few years ago, usually in patients who have already seen several other providers without answers.
We talked a lot about faith, too. I don't think there's a way to separate it from my work. God designed your body to heal, repair, and recover, and my job is to help you align with the way your cells were made to work. The same way we steward a supernatural miracle is the same way we receive a progressive miracle.
We also got into the business side: launching WellSpot Functional Medicine by telemedicine in the summer of 2020 with $4,000 in my account, and building it with no debt. At the end, Steve asked what I'd tell my 13-year-old self. My answer: it's going to be harder than you think, but God has a plan. It's been worth it.
